Mumbai, Jan 01: Tata Power, one of India’s largest vertically integrated power companies, has announced the launch of the Energy Insights & Innovation Lab (EIIL) at its Mumbai headquarters. This strategic research initiative aims to harness cutting-edge research, data analytics, and experimentation to support India’s clean energy transition while enhancing the quality, reliability, and affordability of electricity services for consumers nationwide.
The EIIL is a collaborative initiative with the London School of Economics and Political Science (LSE) and the International Growth Centre (IGC), a global research centre based at LSE. The Lab is designed to address critical challenges facing India’s power sector, including managing peak electricity demand and enabling deeper renewable energy integration in a manner that is reliable, affordable, and aligned with India’s net-zero ambitions.
The Lab was inaugurated by Dr. Praveer Sinha, CEO & MD, Tata Power; Prof. Robin Burgess, Professor of Economics and Director, IGC and EEE Research Programme, LSE; and Dr. Jonathan Leape, Executive Director, IGC, in the august presence of HM Harjinder Kang, Trade Commissioner for South Asia and British Deputy High Commissioner for Western India. Dr. Chetan Ghate, Professor, Indian Statistical Institute (ISI) and IGC ISGH, was also present at the ceremony.
The inaugural event also marked the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between Tata Power, LSE, and IGC to co-develop scalable, evidence-based solutions for India’s power sector by leveraging global best practices and applied research.
Driving System-Level Modelling and Consumer-Level Insights
The Energy Insights & Innovation Lab will integrate consumer behavioural science, advanced data analytics, and energy systems modelling to test practical, real-world solutions at scale. A key focus will be on applied pilot projects leveraging smart meter and IoT data to improve demand-side management, grid resilience, and overall system efficiency.
The Lab will explore how behavioural insights and advanced analytics can help shift or smooth peak electricity demand in urban households—reducing stress on local distribution networks while maintaining consumer comfort and service reliability.
Over time, the partnership aims to expand EIIL into a full-scale innovation hub, supported by enhanced funding, broader institutional collaborations, and an expanded mandate. Future focus areas include tariff design for regulatory approvals, consumer flexibility mechanisms, distributed renewable energy integration, and energy equity.
A Timely Intervention for India’s Power Sector
India’s electricity demand continues to rise rapidly, driven by industrial growth, increasing cooling and heating needs, expanding digital infrastructure such as data centres, and the adoption of electric mobility. In this evolving landscape, efficiency and system flexibility are critical to lowering procurement costs and enabling large-scale renewable energy integration.
The EIIL is designed to meet this moment by combining rigorous research with real-world implementation. By testing interventions, measuring outcomes, and scaling proven solutions, the Lab aims to support utilities and policymakers in shaping sustainable energy strategies.
Strengthening the UK–India Research Partnership
EIIL will operate with a dedicated analyst team co-located at Tata Power’s Mumbai headquarters, working closely with researchers from LSE and IGC. This collaboration exemplifies a strong UK–India research partnership, integrating global academic expertise with on-the-ground industrial capabilities to address shared development and sustainability challenges.
