Mumbai, Oct 21: To address the growing demand for specialised character design and realistic visual effects across film, television, OTT platforms, theatre, and advertising, the MET Institute of Mass Media has officially launched a comprehensive four-month Diploma in SFX and Prosthetic Makeup. Developed in collaboration with the Academy of Beauty with Creativity – Makeup School, powered by Kryolan, the programme offers students a dedicated pathway to mastering the technical and artistic nuances of special effects makeup.

Transforming Vision into Reality: Hands-On Learning
Unlike standard cosmetic courses, this specialised diploma guides students through the complete lifecycle of character creation. The curriculum is structured to deliver deep practical knowledge, moving systematically from initial character concept development to detailed sculpting, mould making, prosthetic application, fine colouring, and camera-ready finishing.
Students will engage in intensive interactive sessions, live demonstrations, and immersive character transformation projects designed to mirror actual studio environments. This will help learners understand how light, high-definition cameras, and storytelling requirements influence prosthetic application and makeup choices on set.
Building an Industry-Ready Portfolio
A core feature of the diploma is its heavy focus on portfolio development. Throughout the four months, students will document every stage of their work—from raw concept sketches and sculpted moulds to fully realised character transformations. By the end of the course, each graduate leaves with a professional, industry-standard portfolio showcasing their technical precision, artistic versatility, and hands-on execution. This tangible record of skill serves as a vital asset when entering the media and entertainment job market.
Speaking at the launch event, Dr. Priya Menon Nair, Director, MET Institute of Mass Media, highlighted the value of the collaboration:
"Character transformation is an art form that demands technical precision at every step – from the initial sculpt to the final application on set. This diploma isn't just about learning techniques; it’s about experiencing the full journey of bringing imaginative characters to life. By pairing hands-on practical execution with global expertise from Kryolan's Professional Make-up, we ensure our graduates step into the entertainment ecosystem with tangible, portfolio-proven skills."
Industry Event Launch Highlights
The diploma was inaugurated in Mumbai in the presence of key leadership and media experts, including Mr. Pankaj Bhujbal, Mrs. Vishakha Bhujbal, Dr. Priya Menon Nair, Dr. Mukesh Sharma, Mr. Allen John, actor-filmmaker Mr. Prammod Sanghee, and educator & photographer Mr Manmohan Thorat.
To demonstrate the real-world impact of SFX techniques, a Kryolan-trained artist performed a live makeup transformation during the event, convincingly turning actor Prammod Sanghee into a battle survivor. The demonstration illustrated the precision required to produce hyper-realistic injuries and cinematic character looks.
Enrolment & Career Opportunities
The Diploma in SFX and Prosthetic Makeup is structured for individuals seeking specialised roles in prosthetic creation, creature design, character styling, and film SFX. With the rapid expansion of streaming content and visual-first storytelling in India and abroad, graduates will be uniquely positioned to pursue opportunities across production houses, ad agencies, and creative studios.
